French Onion Scones

This simple recipe is a total game changer! With just three ingredients — flour, French onion dip, and cheese — you can make light, fluffy, savoury scones in minutes. It’s one of those clever kitchen hacks that feels too good to be true, yet works beautifully every single time.

How we came up with this clever new savoury scone recipe twist

When we noticed social media buzzing with creative dip-based scones, we decided to put our own taste.com.au spin on it. Naturally, the crowd-favourite French onion dip was our go-to choice.

Mixing flour, dip, and cheese creates a perfectly balanced dough that bakes into golden, cheesy scones with a soft, tender crumb. During testing, we found that dips with a yoghurt base make the scones even lighter and fluffier, while cream cheese-based dips give a richer texture — both are delicious, so use whichever you prefer!

Can you use other dips?

Absolutely. This recipe is incredibly flexible — if you have leftover dips in the fridge, go ahead and experiment! We’ve tried versions with jalapeño, beetroot, and roasted capsicum dips, and each one brought something unique to the table.

💡 Pro tip: Jalapeño dip gives these scones a spicy kick that pairs perfectly with melty cheddar.

What goes into this 3-ingredient savoury scone recipe

  • French onion dip – the creamy base that gives flavour and moisture to your dough.

  • Self-raising flour – the magic that makes your scones rise light and tall.

  • Cheddar cheese – for that irresistible golden top and extra flavour.

  • Pickles & sliced cheddar – the ultimate garnish, adding sweet-salty crunch and richness.

These scones are also amazing served with ham and tomato relish, quince paste and beef, or simply warm butter.

Recipe notes & serving tips

Don’t stress about overkneading — unlike traditional scone dough, these can handle a little extra mixing without getting tough. In fact, that bit of extra kneading helps them bake up fluffier!

Planning ahead? You can freeze them! Store a batch in an airtight bag for up to 3 months. Just thaw and warm in the microwave before serving.
